Annecy Animated Film Festival 1987 – Page 4

Aidan Hickey, director of An Inside Job.

Q: You make a reference to Bogart and Wells, a general reference to that kind of movement.

AH: Most of the references are to Greed by Von Stroheim. The Dr. Matigue character is from Greed. The idea was to have the hunt and chase mixed up with Sierra Madre. Then, because the actor who was doing the voice is rather good at the voices of those actors, I introduced them into it. So it just evolved that shape.

Q: Do you prefer to make such simple films or is it that you don’t have the money.

AH: It is entirely a matter of money. I tend, by preference, to use paper with a mixture of cel but to make a film as simple as that is a matter of necessity. It is a sketch for a longer, more complicated film. Much worse things happen to the person but there was no way I could make that film.

Q: Are those mouth clamps used in Ireland? When I go to the dentist they just say open wide.

AH: I looked through a catalogue from a dental manufacturing company. For some of the operations they do have a simpler version of that to hold back the lips for gum operations — I just developed it! I am sure no dentist would ever get away with using something like that.

Q: How do dentists react to the film?

AH: Immediately after it was shown in the festival a gentleman who works for an American dental manufacturing company asked me if they could have a cassette to show at Dental conventions, so they must have a sense of humour.
