MARK FULLER TALKS ABOUT THE ANIMATION COURSE AT LIVERPOOL POLYTECHNIC AND THE MAKING OF HIS FILM ‘GALLERY’

After three years at Liverpool Polytechnic under the guidance of Ray Fields, I feel I am only now beginning to benefit from his seemingly unique philosophy concerning the development of a young film maker.

His concern for the student to be continuously inquisitive and critical of all aspects of visual art has been particularly invaluable.

Working within a small group we concentrated on all aspects of drawing involving the experience of using various media and locations.

Importantly not just restricting ourselves to the model in the life room, this contributed to our ability to consolidate a personal view of sensations and opinions to general aesthetics.
This would prove a beneficial grounding for work in any sphere concerning communication, for us it proved beneficial in helping us to determine what we thought to be interesting and therefore good commercial or even non commercial art.

A balance was created in this method of teaching through a combination of informed seminars and more academic lecture which helped refine ideas in relation to the dualistic aspects of experience and communication.

In short the sort of teaching that encourages students to expand as artists with a critical eye, by avoiding the more academic approach of ordinary conformist teaching.

I realise that individuals concerned with film making have a desire to create meaning and provoke thought, and that this can surpass any language used, realizing the need for development in this area myself as well as continual development technically I see the film made at Liverpool as the beginning towards achieving the balance I require for my future work.
