Barry Purves on Structuring Animation Film (2011)

Stop-motion animator Barry Purves was a guest speaker at the Bradford Animation Festival, UK in November 2011. In this video clip he talks about story structure with illustrations from his latest animation project entitled Plume.

Barry has won over sixty major international awards, including Grand Prix, Best Director, Best Film, and OSCAR and BAFTA nominations.

Barry’s films are known for their innovation, passion, elegance, lush visuals and fresh interpretations, and he has directed and animated some 70 commercials, title sequences and animation inserts for films and pop promos.


Louise Attaque – Du monde tout autour by ChezEddy (2011)

There are great scenes in this music video directed by Louis Clichy of ChezEddy, a production and animation / SFX company based in Paris, France. The music suits the animation perfectly, the execution is perfect and the whole video is very energetic.


The Dreamcatcher / D&AD by Jonathan McKee (2011)

Jonathan McKee won first prize at the D&AD Student Awards 2011, out of all international entries, with this animation. The Walt Disney Company, in association with D&AD, asked students to ‘create a lead character, with heart and optimism, for a narrative-driven comedy cartoon’. Jonathan’s response was a cartoon series based around Baku, a dreamcatcher who spends each night catching and eating members of a vicious group: The Nightmares’ – bad dreams intent on placing the human world into a perpetual sleep.

Jonathan McKee is a design graduate from Northern Ireland, who specialises in graphic design, illustration and motion graphics.


Run Amok III by Triple Z (2011)

Run Amok is the winner of the GRAPHIC 2011 Animation Competition by Sydney-based creative collective Triple Z. The ZZZ Collective consists of animators Brian Neong San, Mark Lawrence Ong and illustrator Okayboss. The international animation contest was organized by the Sydney Opera House.


Yo Gabba Gabba Sea Friends by HunterGatherer (2010)

HunterGatherer were commissioned by Yo Gabba Gabba to animate a song they had written called “Sea Friends”. It is a stop-motion music video for preschoolers about fish and other friends in the sea. All creatures and scenery in the video are painted wood. Mason Jennings performed the song. HunterGatherer is a New York, NY design, illustration, animation and production studio founded by Todd St. John.

Sylvain Chomet Animating (2006)

Sylvain Chomet discusses his approach to animating. This is an excerpt from the BBC documentary “The Secret of Drawing”. It starts with a brief history of animation followed by animator Sylvain Chomet talking as he animates. The work shown is an early test animation for “The Illusionist”.


Carrot Crazy by Dylan Vanwormer and Logan Scelina (2011)

Two hunters vie with each other to produce the most tempting carrot bait to catch a rabbit. This is a senior thesis animation produced at Ringling College of Art and Design by Dylan Vanwormer and Logan Scelina.


The Making of Rango by Gore Verbinski (2011)

The animated characters of “Rango” come to life in the town of Dirt, thanks to the visual effects wizards at Industrial Light and Magic. This video shows Johnny Depp, who voiced the lizard character, and Bill Nighy recording the sound with comments from the animators. Rango was directed by Gore Verbinski.

Rango is be awarded the 2011 Hollywood Animation Award at the 15th annual Hollywood Film Festival and Hollywood Film Awards on 24 October 2011. The animated feature was directed by Gore Verbinski. Johnny Depp voiced the titular lizard character in the film, which also features the voices of Isla Fisher, Abigail Breslin, Alfred Molina, Bill Nighy, Harry Dean Stanton, Ray Winstone and Timothy Olyphant.
